Jewish Observance of Passover
By Clayton Heeren • Apr 18th, 2011 • Category: UncategorizedJERUSALEM (AP) – Jews in Israel and around the world begin observing Passover this evening. The weeklong holiday commemorates the exodus of Biblical Israelites from slavery in Egypt after they slaughtered a lamb and marked their doorposts with its blood so the angel of death would pass over. In their haste to depart, the Bible says the Jews could not let their bread rise, so Jews today commemorate the holiday by getting rid of all bread and eating matzah instead. That’s the centerpiece of the Passover seder (SAY’-dur) meal — a traditional family gathering. Christian tradition views Jesus’ Last Supper with his apostles as a seder meal before he became what John the Baptist had prophesied: “The lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.”
