Woman Sued for Seeking Christian Roommate
By admin • Oct 27th, 2010 • Category: UncategorizedDETROIT (AP) _ A woman who put a card on her church bulletin board seeking a Christian roommate has been accused of violating fair housing laws against religious discrimination.
The Michigan Department of Civil Rights is investigating the complaint filed by someone who saw the handwritten ad posted by the
31-year-old woman in Grand Rapids.
She’s being represented by Alliance Defense Fund attorney Joel Oster, who calls the probe a violation of her constitutional rights to freedom of religion, speech and association.
Oster says his client has a small home with a single bathroom, and hoped to find a roommate who would encourage her in her Christian faith.
Harold Core, spokesman for the Civil Rights department, says the woman could face penalties if its investigation finds she illegally discriminated against non-Christians.
