Nigeria: 6 people killed in region divided by Christians, Muslims
By admin • Oct 27th, 2010 • Category: UncategorizedJOS, Nigeria (AP) _ A Nigerian Army spokesman says six people have been killed in an apparent reprisal attack in central Nigeria, a region violently divided between Christians and Muslims.
Lt. Col. Kingsley Umoh says the attackers hit the Christian village of Chewenkur Tuesday morning. He says the attackers, suspected to be Fulani Muslim herders, killed four teenagers and two women.
Umoh says no arrests have been made. He says the attack came after the killing of a Fulani man and 30 head of cattle in recent days.
The village sits near Jos, the epicenter of religious violence in Nigeria’s “middle belt,” where dozens of ethnic groups vie for control of fertile lands. Politics, jobs and land often motivate violence that falls along religious lines. More than 500 people have died in attacks this year.
