Court: Christian group can’t bar gays and get funding

WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Supreme Court says a law school can deny recognition to a Christian student group that won’t let non-Christians and gay advocates join.

The court voted 5-4 to reject an appeal from the Christian Legal Society, which sued to get funding and recognition from the University of California’s Hastings College of the Law.

The CLS requires voting members to sign a statement of faith and regards “unrepentant participation in or advocacy of a sexually immoral lifestyle” as being inconsistent with that faith.

But Hastings says recognized campus groups must allow all students to be voting members.

Senior Counsel Kim Colby says the Christian Legal Society will return to court to show that Hastings applies that policy selectively — a charge Hastings Dean Leo Martinez denies.
