WASHINGTON (AP) _ On the day after her husband’s death, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg returned to work to read her ruling against the Christian Legal Society.

Ginsburg authored the 5-4 majority opinion denying the Christian group’s appeal for recognition by the University of California’s Hastings College of the Law.

Martin Ginsburg died from cancer Sunday. He was 78.

After the opinion was read, CLS Senior Counsel Kim Colby opened her remarks to reporters by extending the Christian group’s sympathy and prayers for Ginsburg.

Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan expressed similar sentiments Monday at her confirmation hearing.

Colby, meanwhile, said there are reasons to hope that Kagan will be more respectful of religious liberty than Justice John Paul Stevens, whom she’s been nominated to replace.
